  • Exothermic and endothermic reactions
    • when chemical reactions occur, energy is transferred to or from the surroundings.
    • Exothermic Reactions
      • accompanied by a temperature rise
      • They transfer heat energy from the chemicals to the surroundings
        • These make them useful for items such as hand warmers and self heating cans

    • Endothermic reactions
      • Are accompanied by a fall in temperature
      • Heat energy (thermal) is transported from the surroundings  to the chemicals.
        • This makes them useful for sports injury ice packs.
          • Are accompanied by a fall in temperature
    • If a reaction is endothermic in one way it must be exothermic in the other providing it is reversible.
