- Nitrates leached from fertilised fields stimulate the growth of algae in ponds and rivers
- Leaching is when water soluble compounds in soil are washed away (by rain etc) and are washed into rivers or nearby water courses.
- Large amounts of algae block light from reaching the photosynthetic plants below.
- Eventually the plants die as they are unableto photoynthesise.
- Bacteria feed on the dead plant matter
