    • External reasons
      • Cultural deprivation
        • Intellectual and linguistic skills: Children from low income black/Asian lack intelecctual stimulation. Lack of standard English acts as a major barrier. (Labeling - can be seen as less intelligent
        • Attitudes and Values: (lack motivation) Some black children are socialized into to portraying the 'live for today' attitude. Dr Mohammed Ali blames the underachievement of muslim children on the time they spend at mosque.
        • Family structure/parental support: (Moynihan) Black children who lack a male role model are deprived of adequate care and struggle financially (cycle). Asian families are more close knitted - there are rarely Asian single mothers. Asian parents encourage and support their child's efforts. Adult authority creates respectful children who value education.

      • Pupil responses / Subcultures
        • Black pupils adopt different coping mechnisims to deal with institutional racism. Their are rebels, conformists (who are not part of any subculture), retreatists (who disconnected from black culture anf school and innovators (who were pro-education but anti-school).
