- External Factors Affecting Ethnic Differences in Achievement
- Cultural Deprivation= the children are socialised in a way that deprives them of the norms/values needed for educational success
- Intellectual and Linguistic Skills- Bowker (1968) black non-standard english is a barrier to ed progress and integration
- Attitudes and Values- Moynihan (1965) found that black kids are present orientated
- Family Structure/ Parental Support- Moynihan suggests that this is due to back familes mainly being headed by a single mother- lack of male role model
- Asian Families- greater work ethic
- White WCL Families- less support...for ethnic minorities ed is "a way up in society"
- Material Deprivation= the children lack income and wealth resources
- Flaherty (2004)- Pakistanis and Bangladeshis are 3X more likely than whites to be in the poorest fifth of the population
- 15% of ethnic minority households are overcrowded, comapered to 2% of white households

- Wright (1992)- teachers assumed that Asian pupils had a poor grasp of English, and only used simplistsic language towards them

- Fuller- study of black girls who rejected neg labels

- The colour blind- ignore issue of racism
- The liberal chavinists- low expectations of black pupils because of cult dep
- The overt racists- believe blacks are inferior
- Merton- four ways black boys repond to racism:
- The rebels- 'black macho lad' reject school
- The conformists- were keen to succeed
- The retreatists- disconnected from both school and sub cultures
- The innovators- value ed, but did not seek approval from teachers
- The Ethnocentric Curriculum= the curriculum gives priority to white culture and English language
- Coard (2005) history lessons present black people as 'primitive'- lowers black pupils self-esteem
- Institutional Racism= discrimination that is built into the way institutions such as schools operate
- Selection and Segregation- Gilbourn, marketisation gives schools the chance to select pupils and ethnic minorities are disadvantaged due to stereotypes
