  • Ethnicity in the media
    • Under-represented in the media
      • Actors are limited, and often have low status in the media, i.e. Asians play shop keepers, Africans play cleaners
      • Tokenism- the idea that programmes should have some ethnic minorities in, as they 'should' do
        • Characters are usually unimportant
    • Characters reinforce racist stereotypes
    • AKINTI
      • TV coverage of minority groups are usually of: black people's underachievement's in school, violent gangs
      • Positives are usually only shown as athletes
      • Programmes aren't aimed at black people and their culture, only focussed on making profit
    • VAN DIJK
      • Content analysis of news items in the world
        • 1. Minorities portrayed as criminals. i.e. terrorists, violent gangs, muggers
        • 2. Portrayed as a threat to white culture. e.g. immigrants and asylum seekers want our jobs
        • 3. Minorities portrayed as dependent, only come to England to scrounge on our benefits
        • 4. Portrayed as abnormal. Depiction of wearing the hijab is portrayed as women being oppressed by Islam
        • 5. Presented as a moral panic. i.e. immigrants and terrorists
        • 6. Portrayed as less important than whites. Tragedies in 3rd world countries are often under reported and black victims do not get the same attention as whites
    • This is bad, as it creates a fear of ethnic minorities
      • Creates division and segregation in society
    • Creates low self esteem and self image in minority children, black children don't aspire, as they know the system is against them
    • CRITICISMS
      • Representation in the media are increasing, in less stereotypical roles
      • BBC Asian network targets the needs of ethnic minority groups
