- Actors are limited, and often have low status in the media, i.e. Asians play shop keepers, Africans play cleaners
- Tokenism- the idea that programmes should have some ethnic minorities in, as they 'should' do
- Characters are usually unimportant

- TV coverage of minority groups are usually of: black people's underachievement's in school, violent gangs

- Programmes aren't aimed at black people and their culture, only focussed on making profit

- 1. Minorities portrayed as criminals. i.e. terrorists, violent gangs, muggers
- 2. Portrayed as a threat to white culture. e.g. immigrants and asylum seekers want our jobs
- 3. Minorities portrayed as dependent, only come to England to scrounge on our benefits
- 4. Portrayed as abnormal. Depiction of wearing the hijab is portrayed as women being oppressed by Islam
- 5. Presented as a moral panic. i.e. immigrants and terrorists
- 6. Portrayed as less important than whites. Tragedies in 3rd world countries are often under reported and black victims do not get the same attention as whites

- This is bad, as it creates a fear of ethnic minorities
- Creates division and segregation in society
- Creates low self esteem and self image in minority children, black children don't aspire, as they know the system is against them

- Representation in the media are increasing, in less stereotypical roles
- BBC Asian network targets the needs of ethnic minority groups
- Under-represented in the media
