- External factors: Ethnicity and education
- The school that speaks 20 languages- children that attend this school excel at language skills since they have to physically learn English , this makes it more engrained in them
- Parental support: Black single parent mothers don't have enough time to support their families and there is no male role model
- Ken Pryce - sees family structure as a underachievement in Black Caribbean family. Asians are higher achievers because they are more resistant to racism, this gives them self worth
- Sewell (2009) Since they don't have a male role model so they go to gangs which offer 'persuasive loyalty and love'-strong barrier to educational achievement
- Critic: blaming black Caribbean's for their underachievement's rather then the school-institutionalised racism
- Asian families: Lupton- Adult authority is similar to teacher authority
- Archer and Francis: Parents of Chinese pupils rank education highly-this comes from the idea that teachers should never be questioned
- white w/c family-white working class pupils tend to underachieve and have low aspirations-parents don't care enough
