  • Ethnicity and Crime
    • The black population are 2x more likely than white people to be arrest and convicted of an offence
      • Black people are 3x more likely to be sent to prison
    • Asian ethnic group are more likely to be stopped and search that whites but are less likely to get into trouble with the law
    • In self-report studies the white ethnic group had the highest rate of offending at 42%
      • 28% was 'black' ethnic group, followed by 'Asian' ethnic group with 21%
    • Being a personal victim in crime is higher in minority ethnic groups being at 7.2%
    • Stop and Search
      • Black people are 5x more likely to be stopped and searched
      • Phillip and Bowling
        • Black and Asian people are also more likely that White people to be stopped and searched repeatedly and to have more intrusive searches
        • When serious violence or terrorism is a concern, police can stop and search without caution.
          • Leads minority ethnic group being prone to these searches
        • Disproportionate use of stop and search is a problem as it criminalises ethnic minority communities
          • It undermines public support for the police
          • They are likely to be young, unemployed etc
    • Arrest & Cautions
      • Black people make up 8.3% of the populations arrest
      • Phillip and Bowling
        • Ethnic minorities are more likely to remain silent and deny the offence
          • this makes them more suspicious to the police and more likely to be arrested for offences they have not committed
      • People from minority ethnic groups are also less likely that White people to be released after a caution
    • Sentencing & pre-sentence reports
      • White are more likely to be convicted of serious offences one they have been sent for trial
      • Ministry of Justice
        • Blacks were slightly more likely than whites to be sent to prison for the offence of 'actual bodily harm'
          • Also for possession of class A drugs
        • Black people were also given a longer sentence than whites for burglary, but slightly less likely to be sent to prison
    • Prison
      • 6% of the p prisons population were from Asian groups and 11% were from black ethnic groups
    • CASE STUDY
      • Stephen Lawrence was a black East London man who was murdered in a racist attack whilst waiting for a bus in 1993
      • It led to how the police were ran as they made number of errors in collect data and making arrests
        • Gave the perpetrators time to run and 5 suspects were arrested but not convicted
      • Macpherson
        • A public inquiry was held that concluded the police were 'internationally racist'
          • Institutional Racism= a organisation that is racist, they way the police are run is racist not the individuals
        • It made a number of ways to change how the police ran including more recruits of the police that were black and asian
          • Also had to change practise so as not to victims ethnic minorities
