          • GILLBORN & YOUDELL - quicker to discipline, "picked on", acted negatively
        • asian pupils
          • CECILE WRIGHT teachers = english culture superior, isolated & disapproved of pupils. Ignored
      • SUBCULTURES
        • MARY FULLER - black girls in y11, challenged anger to suceed and rejected labels
        • TONY SEWELL, "black machismo", rebellious, anti-school
          • only a small minority fit this label
      • ETHNOCENTRIC CURRICULUM
        • TROYNA & WILLIAMS - schools = white culture priority
        • Ignores indian and chinese culture but they do well!!
      • INSTITUTIONAL RACISM
        • TROYNA & WILLIAMS, racism inbuilt e.g ethnocentric curriculum = poor asian teaching of language
        • HATCHER - governors = race low priority, no way of communicating to ethnic parents
      • SELECTION & SEGREGATION
        • DONALD MOORE & SUSAN DAVENPORT discrimination against "problem children" usually ethnic
        • GILLBORN - marketisation and selection!
        • parents actively self segregate e.g GEWIRTZ asian parents = asian majority schools
    • CLASS & GENDER
      • PAUL CONNOLLY - MASCULINITY black students "disruptive underachievers" asian students "passive and conformist" immature.
