  • Christian values
    •  The Catholic Church teaches that conscience is a powerful voice or law deep within a person that gives us a sense of right or wrong that is connected to God. Our conscience should not be ignored because it informs us about what is moral and immoral.
    • Humans have a tendency towards sin inherited from Adam and Eve, as well as the freewill we have had from then on. However God’s law found in the Church’s teaching is an important guide which helps human conscience to overcome sin.
    • Cardinal virtues
      • Prudence- the wisdom to make the right choices
      • Justice- a sense of fair play towards God and your neighbour
      • Power/Fortitude: courage and strength to get through any difficulties you may face in making moral decisions.
      • Temperance: living life in moderation
        • This relates to how mother teresa lived in provenance, how nuns live in provenance and how Jesus got the disciples to live in moderation to show their commitment to God, when he sent them out in the mission.
    • Theological virtues
      • Faith- enables christians to believe in God and his teachings.
      • Hope: enables us to trust in God's promise to humankind, and to not lose faith when times are tough.
      • Love/charity- the basis of christian life. This includes loving God, loving your neighbour   (the greatest commandment story), and probably the most important- loving yourself, as if you don't love you, how can love others?
    • The 12 gifts/fruits of the holy spirit
      • recieved at baptism and confirmation to help christians live out their lives.
      • Charity,Joy,  Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self-control, Chastity
        • Christians try to live out these virtues in order to help make other people's lives better as well as their own.
        • Relate to topics like euthanasia (Kindness and Charity), abortion (kindness), the priesthood( chastity).
    • The 10 commandments
      • How to understand the commandments- they identify a christians duties, advice the on how to live their lives, they are a gift of freedom though others see them as regulations. ‘I run along the way of your commandments, for you have set my heart free’
      • the 3 commandments about loving God: 1. I am the Lord your God, you shall not have other gods before me,   2. You shall not take the name of the lord your god in vain,   3. Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy
        • 1. Many people these days worship things other than Gods e.g wealth, power. These are false gods and following them will ultimately lead to a lack of happiness when you reach the end of your life.
        • 3. Jesus stated the value of the sabbath for human beings  ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath’. Also sunday was the day of the resurrection, so we keep it holy to remember what we now call 'the day of the lord'.
      • the other 7 commandments about loving your neighbour. 4. Honour your Father and your Mother, 5. You shall not Kill, 6. You should not commit adultery, 7. You shall not steal, 8. You must not bear false witness against your neighbour, 9. You should not covet your neighbours wife, 10. You shall not covet your neighbour’s possessions:
        • 4. Children should respect and obey their parents to support family life and respect the life given to them by their parents. This commandment does work both ways though, adults are expected to respect their children's wishes too.
        • 5. killing is also going agianst the beatitude- ''blessed are the peacemakers''. This also relates to the fact that christians shouldnt support abortion, euthansia, murder or the death penalty.
        • 6. Adultery means you have broken your wedding vows, which are made in the presence of God- this is considered a grave offense. Can completely destroy a family with the breakdown of trust.    Link to divorce, as jesus states divorce for any reason bar adultery, means that person commits adultery if they re-marry( Matthew 19)
        • 7. Stealing includes forgery, vandalism, and unfair wages( fairtrade work link). also cafod link, as christians should try to ensure  fair distrubution of the worlds resources- not stealing what another country needs to funnel or own greed.
    • The Beattitudes
      • The Beatitudes (Jesus’ teachings) point the way for Christ’s followers, in how to achieve eternal happiness.  This could be difficult to follow, so Christians need Gods help to live life according to the Beatitudes.
      • The first 3 beattitudes are:  ‘Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven’ ,  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth’ ,  ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted’
        • These Beattitudes are basically saying that those who live simply and put others before themselves will recieve something satisfying in a spiritual way from God. Also that those who mourn the lack of compassion and basic respect in the world today will be comforted by god that it willchange someday.
      • The next 3 Beattitudes are:  ‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled" ,    ‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy’ ,  ‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God’
        • The first 3 beattitudes are:  ‘Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven’ ,  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth’ ,  ‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted’

        • Merciful- this could link to both euthanasia and abortion. Euthanasia as you are showing mercy by stopping someone from experiencing pain as well as preventing the family feeling the pain of their terminal illness.    Abortion as you could be classed as showing mercy by not having a baby that could destroy your family as some might say it is merciful to kill disabled babies as they wouldn't have a high quality of life.
      • The final 3 beattitudes are: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God’ ,  ‘Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven’,                   ‘Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you’
        • This final beattitude is saysing that whilst you may have to put up with a lot because of your faith, never lost it as your reward in heaven will be great if you are strong enough to carry on being a disciples of god, just as the prophets did.
