  • Ethical Guidelines
    • INFORMED CONSENT
      • Participants must be told what they will be doing, how long it will take and why they are doing it so they can provide ‘informed’ consent.
      • If no deception, gain consent before the research.
      • If deception, get consent after participants know the true aims (debrief).
      • Parental consent if children are being used as participants.
    • DECEPTION
      • Participants should not be deceived unless absolutely necessary. If deception is required, great care and careful consideration must be given to the project.
      • If deception, get consent after participants know the true aims (debrief) and give them an opportunity to withdraw.
    • RIGHT TO WITHDRAW
      • Participants should be free to leave the experiment and take any data with them at any time.
      • Give participants the right at the start/throughout/end of the study.
    • CONFIDENTIALITY
      • Any information and data provided by the participant must be anonymous
      • Allocate participants a number instead of using their names.
    • PROTECTION FROM HARM
      • The physical and psychological safety of the participant must be protected at all times. Participants should leave the study in exactly the same state as when they began.
      • Do not harm participants.   If unintentional harm occurs, participants should be offered therapy to return them to their original state.
    • DEBRIEFING
      • After the research is complete, participants must be ‘debriefed’ and informed of the true motivations of the investigation. They must be given the chance to ask any questions they may have.
