  • Ethical, Environmental and Legal Consideration
    • Ethical
      • Journalists have invaded people’s privacy to unearth stories “in the public interest”
      • Computer systems make people’s privacy something difficult to maintain
      • Is this right or wrong? What if it exposed criminal behaviour?
    • Environmental
      • There are two kinds of environmental consideration
        • Disposal
          • ?Computer systems become obsolete very quickly
          • Technology is constantly being modified and adapted to increase storage capacity or reduce physical size
          • Obsolete computer equipment is referred to as e-waste
          • Many of the components within computer equipment are actually hazardous or even radioactive
          • The argument of what to do with e-waste is still going on and it looks like the problem is going to get worse before it gets better
        • Energy
          • This is all to do with the amount of energy used to run computer systems.
          • Heat is generated as a byproduct of computer systems and so they need to be cooled in order to continue working
          • Server rooms in buildings are air-conditioned, which in itself uses energy
          • Hardware developers are encouraged to consider the amount of energy being used
    • Legal
      • The Computer Misuse Act (1990)
        • This act covers unauthorised access or modification of data
        • Do not use the term “hacking” because it’s not technical enough!
        • Any unauthorised access/modification of data (even guessing someone’s password) is covered by this and is illegal.
        • Depending on the severity of the crime you could be imprisoned and/or fined
      • Data Protection Act (1998)
        • This is all to do with the collection and storage of data
        • It ensures that all information collected about people is relevant
        • It also makes sure that all information is not kept for longer than it needs to be
        • The Act demands that data be stored securely
        • You must also give permission for your data to be passed on to a third party
