- Esters
- Alcohols
- Alcohols react with carboxylic acids to produce esters
- Alcohols are CH3CH2OH
- Carboxylic acid are CH3COOH
- Alcohols are CH3CH2OH
- Alcohols contain function group -OH
- Methane, Ethane and Propanol are the first three members of a homologous series of alcohols
- These three all:
- Are used as a fuel and solvents
- Burn in the air
- Dissolve in water to form a neutral solution
- Burn in the air
- Burn in the air
- Dissolve in water to form a neutral solution
- React with sodium to produce hydrogen
- Are used as a fuel and solvents
- Are used as a fuel and solvents
- Ethanol is the main alcohol in alcoholic drinks
- React with sodium to produce hydrogen
- Ethanol can be oxidised to ethanoic acid either by chemical oxdising agents or by microbial action
- Ethanol acid is the main acid in vinegar

- Carboxylic Acids
- Ethanoic acid is a member of the carboxylic acid, which have functional group -COOH
- Know that Carboxylic acids are:
- Dissolve in water to produce acidic solutions
- React with carbonates to produce carbon dioxide
- React with alcohols in presence of an acid catalyst to produce esters
- Do not ionise completely when dissolved in water and so are weak acid
- Aqueous solutions of weak acids have a higher pH value than aqueous solutions of strong acids, with the same concentartion
- Esters
- Ethyl ethanoate is the ester produced from ethanol and ethanoic acid
- Esters have the functional groups -COO-
- They are voltile compounds with distinctive smells and are used as flavorings and prefumes
