- INITIAL CONTROL
- At Romney he burnt down the town and killed the important people, this spead terror and caused them to eventually surrender
- He moved to Dover who heatd the news of what he did at Romney and they quickly surrended and swore loyalty
- At Cantenbury, they quick;y surrended, Willaim also had established himslef at the religious centre of the kingdom.
- He had captured Winchester which housed the Royal Tresury, meaning he had esbalished a powerful presence in Emgland.
- CASTLES
- Castles were built as a way of increasing Norman Control over England
- There was never more than a day's journey from each other
- By forcing Anglo Saxons to build the castles, it empasised the strength of Norman Conrol of England
- They were intimidating so they discouraged further rebellions against William's rule
- They protected scattered Norman Garrisons
- Made rebellions so much harder to gain momentum
- HARRYING OF THE NORTH 1069
- The North of England was an area that still had strong Saxon and Viking links - this worried William
- 1. On the 28th of January, Saxons met at Durham and killed the newly appointed Norman Earl - Robert de Comines
- 2. Then they captured York and burnt down its castle, killing 900 of Williams soldiers.
- 3. William marched quickly to defeat the rebellion, by paying the Danes to go home
- 4. As punishment the Normans burned whole villages and slaughted everything in sight
- 5. Food and lifestock were killed leaving people to die of stavation, people turned to eating dogs, cats and human flesh
- 6. They covered land in salt to prevent anythig growing for years.
- A reported 10,000 people died as a result of the Harrying
- DEALING WITH ANGLO - SAXON LORDS
- English lords who pledged their loyalty to William were allowed to keep their lands and titles - Edwin, Morcar, Waltheof
- Some Anglo Saxons were also able to buy land off William - Gospatric in 1068 to become earl of Northumbria

- Military - intimadating people by stationing soldiers and castles
- Patronage - Giving land and positions of power to people to ensure their loyalty
- Concessions - Comprimising or giving the enemies what they want to make them support you
- Legality - Willaim tried showing he was the rightful and legal King of England
