- Energy
- Energy stores and systems
- when a system changes the way the energy is stored also changes
- An example of this is a rollercoaster. It starts as gravitational and then goes to kinetic
- sankey diagrams show useful output energy, waste output energy and shows how much has been inputed
- calculating energy changes
- kinetic energy= 0.5 x mass x (speed)x (speed)
- to raise gravitational potential energy we raise the object above ground level
- gravitational potential energy=massx gravitational field strength x height
- specific heat capacity and internal energy
- internal energy is the amount of energy the particles have in a system
- when we heat somehing up it changes the way the enrgy is stored in the system by increasing the energy of particles within it
- as the energy increases , the temperature will either increase or it will change state
- temperature increase depends on: *mass of substance heated *what the substance is *energy input
- specific heat capacity of a substance = is the energy needed to raise 1kg of a substance by 1 degrees Celcius
- work done = force x distance
- energy transfers
- energy can be transferred, stored and spread out to the surroundings
- energy cannot be created or destroyed
- in a closed system the energy never chnages but it may change how it is stored
- unwanted energy transfers are waste energy
- how can we reduce unwanted transfers: *lubrication- reduces friction thst produces heat *tightening any loose parts which prevent unwanted vibration *thermal insulation-reduce heat loss
