  • Endocrine system
    • hormones are chemical messengers that are secreted by the endocrine glands into the bloodstream where they travel to the target organ
    • adrenaline
      • produced by the adrenal glands
      • responsible for 'fight or flight' response for survival
      • Increases heart rate, dilates pupils, makes hairs stand, increases breathing rate
      • targets many organs
    • Thyroxine
      • Produced by the thyroid gland in neck
      • Control metabolic rate- responsible for growth
      • example of negative feedback
        • If levels are too low, it stimulates the hypothalamus so the pituitary gland releases TSH which causes the thyroid to produce more thyroxine
      • when levels are returned to normal these hormones are inhibited to stop further increases
