- Endocrine system
- hormones are chemical messengers that are secreted by the endocrine glands into the bloodstream where they travel to the target organ
- adrenaline
- produced by the adrenal glands
- responsible for 'fight or flight' response for survival
- Increases heart rate, dilates pupils, makes hairs stand, increases breathing rate
- targets many organs
- Thyroxine
- Produced by the thyroid gland in neck
- Control metabolic rate- responsible for growth
- example of negative feedback
- If levels are too low, it stimulates the hypothalamus so the pituitary gland releases TSH which causes the thyroid to produce more thyroxine
- when levels are returned to normal these hormones are inhibited to stop further increases
