    • Religion
      • Elizabeth I tried to create a middle way church. She wanted Catholics and Protestants to be able to worship under the Church of England. She just wanted as many people as possible to go to church, she did not care about their beliefs.
      • Elizabeth called herself the Governor of the Church of England by an Act of Supremacy in 1559.
      • In 1559 an Act of Uniformity insisted that everybody used a new prayer book. It was worded in a away that would not highly offend Catholics.
      • Catholics began to threaten Elizabeth's life so she became harsher in her treatment of them. Catholics began having to worship in secret.
      • Puritans were extreme Protestants. They did not approve of things such as theatres and dancing. They wanted Elizabeth to introduce stricter reforms.
    • Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots
      • Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I were cousins, however, they had never met.
      • Mary Queen of Scots was Catholic however, Scotland was a Protestant country. She was treated with suspicion.
      • The Scottish nobles turned against Mary and she fled Scotland to England to ask for Elizabeth's help.
      • Elizabeth had Mary imprisoned as she was seen as a threat to the throne.
      • Catholics wanted to get rid of Elizabeth and put Mary on the throne. Elizabeth did not punish Mary for this as she was not involved in the plans and she was family.
      • Mary was caught writing a letter to someone involved in the conspiracy to remove Elizabeth. She was put on trial for treason. Elizabeth was reluctant to kill Mary but eventually signed her death warrant.
    • Relations with Scotland and France
      • Scotland had a long standing friendship with France which concerned Elizabeth as she was worried France would use Scotland as a passage to England.
      • French Catholics had a large influence in Scotland which was unpopular with Scottish nobles. in 1560 Elizabeth sent troops to support the protestants and French forces withdrew.
      • James VI, Mary Queen of Scot's son, developed a good relationship with Elizabeth.
      • From the 1580s, Scotland and England became allies and James would go on to succeed Elizabeth when she died.
    • Irish Rebellions
      • Ireland was always a problem for Elizabeth. Many Irish clans did not want to be ruled by the English.
      • Elizabeth gave her lords land in Ireland in an attempt to regain some control, but some of them ignored her wishes.
      • There were 3 big rebellions in Ireland during Elizabeth's reign. The most significant, The Nine Years War (1594-1603) resulted in Elizabeth burning whole villages.
      • In the end a peace treaty was signed with Ireland just after Elizabeth's death in 1603.
    • Relations with Spain
      • King Philip II got on well with Elizabeth to begin with and even asked to marry her. However, relations eventually got worse.
      • Philip had been married to Queen Mary and wanted to regain his power in England.
      • The Catholics in Spain did not believe that Protestant Elizabeth should be on the throne.
      • Elizabeth was concerned about the Spanish support for the Irish rebellions.
      • Elizabeth had been secretly encouraging attacks on Spanish ships and helping the Netherlands (Spain's enemy)
      • When she executed the Catholic Queen Mary of Scots in 1587 it angered the Catholic Spanish.
      • In May 1588 Philip sent the Spanish Armada against England. Within weeks the fleet was limping home and the armada had failed.
        • The leader of the armada was a soldier not a sailor.
        • The English had faster ships and better sailors.
        • The English crippled the Spanish fleet whilst it was in Calais by sending fire ships.
        • The ships were destroyed by rocks when they had to sail all the way around Britain.
