        • At time Catholic resented a religious uprising so had limited support
        • Haigh believed Elizabeth 'blundered'
    • Northern Earls feel resentful - Northumberland and Westmoreland

  • Mary Queen of Scots
    • Porter "Mary Queen of Scots was a magnet for rebels".
    • Marries Darnley who is murdered and Brothwell is suspected
      • Mary marries Brothwell which causes controversy
    • Arrives in England in 1568
      • Elizabeth puts her under house arrest.
    • When Mary realizes James isn't coming for her, she becomes desperate
      • Ridolfi Plot 1571
        • An attempt to remove Elizabeth from throne and replace with Mary.
          • The plot was hatched and planned by Robert Ridolfi,  who was able to travel between Brussels, Rome and Madrid to gather support without attracting too much suspicion.
      • Throckmorton Plot 1583
        • Attempt by Roman Catholics to murder Elizabeth and replace her with Mary Queen of Scots.
      • Babington Plot 1586
        • The  Babington Plot was a plot  to assassinate Queen Elizabeth, a Protestant, and put Mary, Queen of Scots, her Roman Catholic cousin, on the English throne.
          • Burghley intercepted with spies and used as evidence to have Elizabeth sign death warrant.
            • Mary Queen of Scots executed in 1587
  • Catholics
    • Church papists would go to Church
      • Recusants refused fines.
    • Open Opposition
      • Seminary Priests were less radical arrived in 1574 after training in Douai.
        • Cuthbert Maine executed in 1577
        • 438 arrived and 98 were executed
      • Jesuits arrived in 1580 and were more radical
        • Campion executed in 1587
          • Knowledge of Jesuits + SP's were from own writing so could be exaggerated.

        • Influence of SP's + J's exaggerated
        • Catholicism wasn't severed by Elizabeth's reign.
        • Marian clergy were not only effective in maintaining Catholicism but also forged meaningful links with the missionary priests themselves.

        • SP's + J's were critical in reviving Catholicism as it was dying.
        • Cost of revival of religion was priests served the needs of gentry only.
    • Bossy estimated 80% of England were Catholic in 1556 and 1% in 1603

    • Different types of Puritans

      • 1566 - Elizabeth forces Archbishop Parker to issue the advertisements which state acceptable robes
        • Number of clergy resign is 37 but rest remain

      • Strickland Bill to reform Book of Common Prayer 1571

      • Turners book and bill 1567
      • Puritan MP's are few in number and unpopular
    • Local Movement
      • Prophesying
        • Wants to educate the clergy with sermons which Elizabeth dislikes
          • Elizabeth asks Archbishop to disband movement but he refused so Grindal was suspended from 1577 - 1583
      • Classical Movement
        • More radical and secretly controlled by John Field.
          • Archbishop Whitgift is anti-puritan so he aggressively challenges movement with questionnaires
    • Separatists
      • 1580'S Burrow and Greenwood wanted to separate the Church and monarchy so England would have separate churches
      • Act of Seditious Sectaires is passed so Burrow + Greenwood executed.
  • Why was Elizabeth's Church so strong?
    • Elizabeth had a long reign of 45 years
    • England had an anti-catholic feeling after Armada
    • Most of England supported Elizabeth
    • Execution of Mary Queen of Scots removed Elizabeth's biggest threat
    • Shortage of priests
    • Duran "Vast majority of Catholics were loyal to their Queen".
