- Elements of the blood
- Red blood cells
- They carry oxygen from the lungs to all the other cells in the body.
- They have a large surface area (more room to carry oxygen)
- Biconcave disc shape and no nucleus (to increase surface area)
- They contain haemoglobin which binds to oxygen in the lungs (oxyhaemogl-obin)
- This splits to haemoglobin and oxygen in body tissues to release oxygen to cells
- White blood cells
- Phagocytes
- These change shape to engulf foreign micro organisms- phagocytosis
- Lymphocytes
- These produce antibodies to fight against foreign cells
- When you have an infection, your white blood cells multiply, so a blood test will show a high white blood cell count.
- These produce antibodies to fight against foreign cells
- Phagocytes
- Platelets
- Platelets help the blood clot
- The blood will clot at a wound and stop micro- organisms from getting in
- They are small fragments of cells that have no nucleus
- Lack of platelets cause excessive bleeding and bruising
- Platelets help the blood clot
- Plasma
- The liquid that carries everything in blood
- Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
- Nutrients (glucose) and amino acids
- Carbon dioxide
- Urea
- Hormones and proteins
- Antibodies and antitoxins produced by white blood cells
- The liquid that carries everything in blood
