- Electrolysis
- When ionic substances are dissolved in water or molten, the ions are free to move within it
- Passing electric currents through molten/dissolved substances breaks them down into elements
- The substance that's broken down is called the electrolyte
- Positively charged ions move to the negative electrode, and negatively charged ions move to the positive electrode.
- Objects can be electroplated using electrolysis
- E.g. copper plating and silver plating
- At the negative electrode, positively charged ions gain electrons (reduction), and positively charged ions lose electrons (Oxidisation)
- OILRIG
- If there's a mixture of ions, the products formed depend on the reactivity of the elements involved
