  • How can the effects of tropical storms be reduced?
    • PREDICTION
      • National hurricanes centres issues early warnings.
        • This kind of centre in Florida predicts storms path and iits intensity.
          • For up to seven days using a 'track cone'.
            • The cone shapes alllows for error with the unpredictable behaviour of tropical storms.
              • Around 70% of tropical storms occur with the predicted area.
                • Especially when it hit lands.
        • This is so people have more time to evacuate.
          • Evacuation is costly and time consuming, particularly if the path of the tropical storm doesn't pass the area.
          • Some may not bother.
      • Weather data is fed into supercomputers which run models.
        • These models predict path and intensity of tropical storms.
        • Can give five days warning
          • A more accurate location within 400 kilometres.
      • For LIC's they will find it difficult to monitor and predict tropical storms with accuracy because of lack of funding.
        • They rely on predictions coming from HIC's such as America.
    • PROTECTION
      • Protection refers to anyway that you can protect houses, yourself, famly and the community.
      • Install an emergency generator
      • Tie down windburn objects e.g. garden furniture
      • Remove trees from buildings. Protect from falling onto houses.
      • Install hurricane straps (galavanised metal) between the roof and walls.
      • Reinforce garage doors.
      • Buildings have areas of weakness that can be reinforced to reduced damage by forces winds of tropical storms.
        • Mitigation
      • Shutters on windows to prevent glass from smashing an injuring people.
      • High sea walls are constructed along the coast to protect communities from storm surges.
      • Buildings can be designed to  withstand tropical storms by using reinforced concrete.
      • All of this will reduce the numbers of people being killed, injuried, buildings destroyed, less homeless and less unemployment
