      • "with ape-like fury" compares Hyde's anger to an animal, which shows that his actions, such as trampling a girl, are very animal-like and also links to Darwin's theory, sugesting that Hyde is undeveloped
      • His first reaction to Utterson is compared to a snake as it says"shrank back with a hiss"
      • Hyde is often referred to as "it" which suggests that he is not seen as human

      • He is disliked by Utterson at first sight which is suggested by "There is something wrong with his appearance, something displeasing, something downright detestable"
      • Hyde makes other people feel unease which is shown by "one look, so ugly, that it brought out the sweat on me like running"
    • Opposite to Jekyll
      • Jekyll has "all men's respect" in society but Hyde is "damnable" and hated by everyone
      • Jekyll tries to cover up his evil thoughts and cares about reputation whereas Hyde is true to himself and shows his evil clearly
