    • 1944 Tripartite system
      • Grammar schools secondary moderns, technical school
        • Grammar schools- mostly middle class children attended
          • children that passed 11+ - mostly m/c due to being able to afford materials and having better education
        • Secondary moderns- mostly working class attended
          • children that failed 11+ - mostly w/c bc material deprivation and cultural deprivation
        • technical schools- very few so not really important
      • promoted meritocracy through 11+ - all children take same exam and learn same content meaning same change of achieving
      • Myth of meritocracy -Althusser/ Marxist-- w/c don't have same chance as m/c pupils
        • Feminist- girls dont have same chance as boys bc girls have to achieve higher in 11+ to get into grammar
          • legitimising class and gender inequality
    • 1965 Comprehensive system
      • abolishment of the 11+
      • All pupils in the same area attended the same comprehensive school
        • middle class & working class attended same schools
          • less separation of classes
        • promoted equality of opportunity
        • poor standards in schools

            • parents had no choice in education for their child
    • 1988 Education act- marketisation policies
      • main aims- competition and choice
        • parentocracy & raising educational standards through marketisation
          • League tables - parents can pick best school with best results
            • schools on top of the league tables - mostly middle class & over subscribed
              • cream skimming - best schools picked best pupils
                • myth of parentocracy
              • middle class cultural capital
            • school on bottom of league tables mostly working class, materially deprived and under subscibed
          • Ofsted -inspect and regulate schools
          • National curriculum- all pupils are taught same subjects
          • Formula funding - schools funded based on how many pupils they recruit
        • competition increased standards
      • neo-liberal and new right approach
    • 1997 New Labour
      • Equality of opportunity, increasing choice and diversity
        • Education action zones (EMZ)
          • Raises standards in deprived areas, more materials and support
          • EMZ not in wealthier areas, not as much support for all, could be seen as unfair
        • Aim higher programmes
        • Educational Maintenance allowance EMA for poor 16-18 y/o
          • disadvantaged pupils go on to FE and HE
            • many pupils only stayed on for the money
              • holds back academic students
        • increased funding for state education
        • Functionalists- promotes social solidarity, helps role allocation for w/c pupils to do well in future
    • 2010 coalition government-  conservative
      • relects neo- liberal thinking- reducing the role of the state and moving away from comprehensive
        • Introduction of academies
          • all schools encouraged to become academies
            • some owned by privately owned chains & some by government
        • free schools- state funded but set up by parents, religious groups etc
      • MARKETISATION & PRIVATISATION
        • Spending cuts by the government on ed
          • standards have continued to increase
            • all by spending less
