  • Economic Problems in the early 1920's
    • WW1 had a huge impact on economy.
      • By 1919, National debt was at 144,000 million marks
      • The cost of rearmament before the war & during were huge.
    • Reparations (TofV) made matters worse.
      • Requests to remove payments in 1922 were refused.
      • the German Gov wouldn't be able to repay by 1923 or 1924.
    • By 1922, national debt had risen to 469,000 million marks.
    • Some Allies suggested that the German gov had deliberately made things worse
      • an excuse to stop reparations altogether.
    • the French response was to occupy the German Industrial area of the Ruhr.
      • they sent engineering there in Jan 1923 to secure coal.
        • they claimed the Germans should be paying them as well as reparations
  • The Occupation of the Ruhr and Hyperinflation
    • The German Gov instructed workers in the area to not cooperate with the occupying forces.
      • Offer passive resistance
      • Refuse to mine the coal
      • Suspension of reparation payments.
    • French and Belgian forces responded by arresting all mine owners
      • from this they took over the mines & railways.
