  • Biological treatments for schizophrenia- drug therapy
    • Atypical antipsychotics
      • Used since the 1970s to treat SZ. They work on both dopamine and serotonin.
        • E.g clozapine and risperidone
        • Reduce the amount of dopamine, glutamate and serotonin receptions in synapses and reduce the negative symptoms such as depression and avolition
      • Side effects: fewer than typical antipsychotics but Clozapine users are subject to argranulocytosis
    • Typical antipsychotics
      • Used since the 1950s to treat SZ. They are dopamine antagonists.
        • E.g Chlorpromazine
        • Reduce the amount of dopamine receptions in synapses which reduce positive symptoms  such as hallucinations
      • Side effects: dizziness, sleepiness, stiff jaw, tardive dyskinesia and NMS which can be fatal as it causes high temperature and coma
