  • Drilling
    • Process of making holes
      • Secured
        • Hand operated drill
        • Drilling machine
      • Use rotating cutting tool
        • Secured
          • Hand operated drill
          • Drilling machine
    • Most common: Twist Drill
      • Manufactured from high speed steel
      • Used to produce holes in most materials
      • Two types
        • Parallel shank
          • Held in drilling machine by a chuck
        • Taper shank
          • Placed directly into machine and held through friction
    • Drill Bits
      • Have fluting or grooves along them
        • Allow Swarf + waste material to be carried away
      • Need lubricants when drilling metals
        • Keep tip of drill cool
        • Keep drilling efficient
    • Other types of drills
      • Flat bits
        • Drill deep holes in wood
      • Forstner bits
        • Drill flat bottomed holes in wood
      • Auger Bits
        • Drill deep holes using carpenters brace
      • Countersunk bits
        • Conical drill bits
        • 90 degrees
        • Allows countersunk head screw to be inserted
          • Head of screw is flush with surface of material
      • Hole Saws
        • Circular shaped cutting rings
          • 20mm-150mm diameter
      • Tank cutters
        • Circular cutters
          • Adjustable radius
    • Wood is easier and faster to drill into
      • Don't need cutting fluids
        • However could overhead and burn
          • Important to use sharp drill set to correct rotational speed
    • Marking out
      • Must establish correct posistion
        • Metal
          • Use a scriber
          • Must centre punch where hole is going to be
            • Guide drill into correct position
        • Wood
          • Sharp pencil
          • Drill lines which cross the hole that needs to be drilled
            • Metal
              • Use a scriber
              • Must centre punch where hole is going to be
                • Guide drill into correct position
