- The hypodermic model
- Idea associated with needles, injections and drugs. Messages from the media go straight into the minds of the viewers.
- Weakness: Little account taken of the very many different ways people use and enjoy the media.
- Desensitisation
- Too much violence in the media can make us less sensitive to real life violence
- Catharsis effect (Feshbach)
- The violence in the media actually reduces the violence in society by allowing an outlet for and releasing the feelings and frustrations harmlessly.
- The hypodermic model
- Argues that the media will not change beliefs that have been accumulated from life experience.
- Strength: Audience assumed to be intelligent of distinguishing fact from fiction.
