  • Do you agree that in recent years government control over parliament has been declining?
    • Margaret Thatcher (1979-1990) - Mostly control parliament, until after the poll tax, her own party got rid of her.
    • John Major (1990-1997) - Not controlling parliament, his party voted against him, weak control over his MPs.
    • Tony Blair (1997-2007) - Yes until the Iraq War (2003), many MPs voted against him.
    • Gordon Brown (2007-2010) - Didn't control his parliament, he lacked personality.
    • David Cameron (2010-2016) - Surprisingly yes because he was desperate to keep the coalition going.
    • Theresa May (2016-2019) - No control, she lost her majority in the election, relying on the DUP, executive dominance by the legislative.
    • Boris Johnson (2019-present) - At first no because he was inheriting May's mess, also he didn't have a majority, he was also blocked from having an election by the government. Dec 2019 - it changed because he won an election against a weak labour party leader (weak opposition) and faced a backbench rebellion.
