- DNA
- DNA is a polymer. Made up of 2 strands in a double helix shape.
- DNA contains coded info & genetic material.
- Gene = small section of DNA found on a chromosome. DNA determines what proteins the cell produces that in turn determine what type of cell it is
- Each gene codes for a particular sequence of amino acids which make a specific protein. Only 20 amino acids used.
- Genes tell cells in what order to put the amino acids together.
- Each gene codes for a particular sequence of amino acids which make a specific protein. Only 20 amino acids used.
- Genome = entire set of genetic material in an organism
- Human genome allows scientists to identify genes that are linked to diseases.
- Allows scientists to treat inherited diseases - knowing which genes are linked to it.
- DNA is made up of nucleotides ( repeating units).
- Each nucleotide contains 1 sugar, 1 base & 1 phosphate.
- Sugar & Phosphate form a 'backbone'.
- Each amino acid is coded for by a sequence of 3 bases in the gene.
- Each nucleotide contains 1 sugar, 1 base & 1 phosphate.
- DNA is a polymer. Made up of 2 strands in a double helix shape.
