        • must cover one of the reasons - children or lack of them, woman independence, work or career, abuse, divorce is easier
        • islamic law isnt part of british law so they also have to get a civil divorce
      • "keep her in goodness or release her in kindness"
    • christianity
      • Roman Catholic church declares it impossible to get divorced since the marriage has made the couple into "one flesh" and it is a sacrament however, they can receive an annulment as long as the couple have never had sex or if a partner didn't consent to or understand the marriage
      • church of england accepts that divorce is possible since some marriages fail. divorcees can usually remarry in Baptist or Methodist Churches
      • Jesus says divorce and remarriage is only allowed if someone's partner has been unfaithful
        • "A man [and] his wife will become one flesh...what God has joined together let no one separate"
      • some christians see an unhappy marriage as a waste of 2 lives and so divorce is preferable
