    • an action is only correct/right if a person who is virtuous would do the same in the same circumstance
    • a virtuous person is only a person who acts virtuously
    • a person acts virtuously if they live the virtues
    • A virtue is a moral characteristic that a person needs to live well
    • VIRTUE THEORY
      • WHAT IS IT
        • this is the idea that to act morally you have to follow the virtues
        • this theory looks at persons character when considering what is moral
        • it uses deontology and  consequentialism
  • STRENGTHS
    • It centres ethics on the person and what it means to be human
    • considers the full story
    • It includes the whole of a person's life
    • VIRTUE THEORY
      • WHAT IS IT
        • this is the idea that to act morally you have to follow the virtues
        • this theory looks at persons character when considering what is moral
        • it uses deontology and  consequentialism
    • allows you to learn from your mistakes
  • WEAKNESS
    • it doesn't provide clear guidance on what to do in moral dilemmas
      • although it does provide general guidance on how to be a good person
      • presumably a totally virtuous person would know what to do and we could consider them a suitable role model to guide us
    • it doesn't address the problem of what to do if a person thinks they are acting virtuously but actually they are not.
    • there is no general agreement on what the virtues are
      • and it may be that any list of virtues will be relative to the culture in which it is being drawn up.
    • it is subjective

    • somethings are always wrong and there are no rules to address this
