  • Disinhibiton as an explanation of media influences
    • violent media undermines and looses the social constraints that normally inhibits aggressive behaviour, making it more liekly.
      • we learn through education, upbringing and moral messages on TV that violence is socially unacceptable. As a result, there are powerful social and psychological inhibitions against using aggression.
        • exposure to violent media can change these standards of what is considered acceptable behaviour, creating new social norms or the viewer.
    • Aggression is made to appear as normative and socially sanctioned.
    • support comes from psychologists. found participants that watched a film depicting aggression as vengeance gave more electric shocks of longer duration to a confederate. this suggests media violence may disinhibit aggressive behaviour when it is presented as vengeance, as it is seen as a strong justification for violence.
    • chances of it occuring may depend on other factors. researchers fund children frowing up in households with strong norms against violence are unliekly to experience sufficient disinhibition for them to exhibit aggressive behaviour. whereas the disinhibiton effect is stronger in families where children experience physical punishment from their parents and where they identify with violent heroes.
      • suggests there may be practical applications for this research in encouraging parents to prevent children from feeling effects of disinhibition
