      • Arranged elements into an order that we would now recognise.
      • Because of this we now have a greater understanding of the structure of atoms and of the subatomic particles they contain.
      • Dimitri Mendeleev put forward his idea just five years after Newland put forward his table.
      • Mendeleev put forward his idea in 1869, Newland put forward his theory in 1864.
      • Mendeleev also arranged the elements into order of relative atomic mass but he did some other things that gave him the edge on Newland's table, henceforth making Mendeleev's more successful.
      • He realised that physical and chemical properties were reacted to the realtive atomic mass
        • He then arranged the elements into columns where the properties of those elements showed similarities.
      • Sometimes this method of arranging elements into columns left gaps, but instead of seeing this as a problem, Mendeleev decided that this meant that that there were elements yet to be discovered that were causing these gaps and that once they had all been discovered the table would be complete.
      • He was also able to figure out the relative atomic mass of the missing elements ans so was able to predict their properties.
        • Once those elements were eventually found, Mendeleev was proved to have been correct.
          • For example, Mendeleev predicted the properties of an elements supposed to be found beneath aluminium.
            • When this element, gallium, was found, it turned out that Mendeleev was right about it's properties.
              • Gallium was discovered in 1875.
                • Two other predicted elements were later found, adding more credit to Mendeleev's table.
