- food is broken down by the teeth and enzyme amylase
- Amylase breaks down carbohydrates into sugar
- Stomach
- food passes down from the oesophagus into the stomach
- The food mixes with the stomach acids and enzymes
- Small Intestine
- Food passes into the small intestine where more enzymes are released to break down carbohydrates proteins and fats.
- The smaller molecules are absorbed by Villi.
- Villi increase the surface area of the small intestine to absorb more nutrienst
- Large Intestine
- Absorbs water to put back into the body
- Rectum
- The undigested food molecules form faecus and pass through the rectum to excreted via the anus
