  • DIFFUSION
    • allows substances to pass in and out of a cell
    • occurs when particles spread from a high concentration to a low concentration
    • particles must be free to move: a gas or particles dissolved in a solution
    • particles move down the concentration gradient
    • examples include
      • smell of cooking around a kitchen
      • osmosis
        • movement of water from a high concentration to a low concentration through a partially permeable membrane
          • a partially permeable membrane allows some things to pass through but prevents other things from passing through
        • plants use osmosis to gain water through the roots
