- in general, any person involved in physical activity will need a greater intake than those that are not (if BMR is similar)
- endurance-based performer
- endurance training makes athlete better at metabolising fats therefore fat intake needs to be increased
- needs to be a larger intake of carbohydrates to satisfy the energy demands of the elite performer
- higher metabolism - require more minerals and vitamins
- power performer
- increase in carbohydrate intake because of the energy demands
- increase in protein intake because of the increase in muscle repair and growth
