    • Type 1 diabetes
      • The body cannot make any insulin
      • Usually occurs in children, adolescents and young adults
    • Type 2 diabetes
      • Not enough insulin is produced, or the insulin produced is not working correctly
      • Tends to develop gradually as people get older- usually after the age of 40
    • Risk Factors
      • Cause of type 1 diabetes is uncertain, may be genetic
      • 80% of people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are overweight
      • The older you get the more at risk you are of type 2 diabetes
      • Leading an inactive lifestyle can contribute to weight gain
      • Family history- the closer the relative the higher the risk
      • Heart attack or stroke may increase your risk
