  • DESIGN ARGUMENT
    • Intro
      • Aim; to suggest that the existence of God is most likely through arguing the design of the universe,
      • Analogies
      • Inference to the best explanation
      • Occam's Razor
      • A Posteriori premises
    • Paley's argument
      • Analogy of the watchmaker
        • Can see that the world is designed
        • World is more like a watch than a rock
          • If watches are designed, and the world is like a watch, then the world must've been designed
            • Inference to the best explanation means God is the Designer
              • HUME'S CRITICISMS
                • Team of God's.
                  • Watches are designed by teams of people - if the world is like a watch - inference to the best explanation would suggest that a team designed the world.
                • Malevolent or infantile god
                  • Design doesn't explain the imperfection in the world.
                • World isn't like a watch
                  • Analogy doesn't work. World is not like a watch as it is an organic thing. It's more like a vegetable.
    • Aquinas' 5th way qua regularity
      • a posteriori premise that everything moves towards a purpose or goal
        • organic beings can't move by themselves
        • organic beings lack intelligence
        • and intelligent being must move organic beings towards their goal
      • Just as the arrow is moved by the archer towards it's goal, God'd design has made it so that beings without intelligence move towards a goal by his design.
        • CRITICISM OF EVOLUTION
          • This can be easily argued with evolution. This doesn't just argue for design,a and can support science as well
            • Evolution gives the appearance of design. Inorganic beings have evolved to behave a certain way, i.e. plants facing the sun, and thus give the appearance of design.
    • Modern arguments
      • Swinburne
        • Card Machine analogy
          • The universe as it is, is the only way that we can see the universe. There is no other way human life can exist
            • Is it more likely to be chance that the universe hosts human life? Or design?
              • Bomb analogy (specific values needed on wind dials for an explosion)
                • Strong force between atoms, goldilocks zone. All provide ample evidence for design and hosting huan life. All specific. Any deviation would mean we couldn't exist.
              • CRITICISMS
                • Multiverse theory
                  • possibility that there are many more universes that have different conditions. We just happened to be able to evolve in this one
                    • COUNTER!
                      • No evidence for multiverse. There is, however, evidence for design of the universe.
                • Anthropic principle
                  • egotistical to believe that the universe was designed purely to host human life,
          • The values (presented as ten ace of spades  from ten 52 card decks) give perfect conditions for life.
      • White
        • Strong force between atoms, goldilocks zone. All provide ample evidence for design and hosting huan life. All specific. Any deviation would mean we couldn't exist.

You're gonna need to zoom in a fair bit to actually see the notes properly........ sorry...
