  • Depression
    • CHARACTERISTICS
      • behavioural; low anxiety levels = lethargy and withdrawal from life (social, work etc)
    • EXPLANATIONS
      • Beck's negative triad; errors in the way people think - overgeneralisation, catastrophic thinking and negative thinking. Negative self schemas impact the way people see things e.g. world, themselves, the future - negative view of them.
      • Ellis' ABC model; Activating event = irrational thoughts are triggered by external events. Beliefs - these events triggered irrational beliefs - musterbation and disastrous thinking. Consequences = event triggers belief which results in emotional, behavioural and cognitive consequences
        • EVALUATION; supported by research = Beck (1999) meta analysis of cognitive vulnerability and depression. proves cognitive explanation is a valid theory. publication bias = lowers reliability
          • real world applications = led to introduction of CBT = very effective at treating symptoms = people can go back to work, earn wages and pay taxes = increase on economy
          • too simplistic = doesnt explain where irrational thoughts originate and doesn't say why they occur in general + doesn't explain how serotonin helps treat depression = not a fully valid theory
          • blames the patient = blames patient for thinking negatively as thoughts are something we have general control over = unhelpful as people may not want treatment for a disorder they "caused"
          • Beck's negative triad; errors in the way people think - overgeneralisation, catastrophic thinking and negative thinking. Negative self schemas impact the way people see things e.g. world, themselves, the future - negative view of them.
    • TREATMENTS
      • cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) a talking therapy which helps people manage their problems by recognising their thoughts and how they affect feelings and behaviours
        • - assess and clarify problems. identify goals and how to achieve them. identify negative thoughts. help patient understand the link between thoughts and feelings/behaviours. change thoughts from negative to positive.
          • data gathering hwk = keep a diary with events listed. challenge irrational thoughts = see if they are true or not. reinforce positive thoughts. (patient = scientist theory)
      • REBT
        • Dispute - challenge irrational thoughts. Effect - treatment is successful when thoughts are challenged and rationalised. Feelings - produce more positive feelings.
          • 1. logical disputing - does it make sense? 2. empirical disputing - is there any evidence? 3. pragmatic disputing - is it helpful in any way?
            • behavioural action - encourages depressed patient to engage in enjoyable activities = provides more evidence to dispute irrational thoughts.
