    • teeth modified to ensure tough plant material, that is hard to digest, is thoroughly ground up before swallowing.
    • incisors on lower jaw only that cut against a horny pad, on the upper jaw.  (canines are  indistinguishable from incisors).
  • diastema (gap) separates front teeth from side teeth / premolars. tongue then manipulates the plant material, in this gap, to the large cheek teeth.
