  • 1918- oldest brother died due to war, responsible for persuading Deitrich to study theology
    • age 13- Dietrich had a vision of how the church should be transformed
      • 1930- completed his doctoral thesis and became a lecturer, also working on his idea of a radical form of Christianity
        • argued that rather than allow the state to make important descisions, the church should be more active in challenging it to achieve justice
