- Abnormal Characteristicssuch as High IQ are just as unusual as those that are low, but being super intelligent is not an undesirable characteristic that needs treatment

- Labelling is an issue, just because someone has a low IQ, doesn't mean that person needs to be labelled as abnormal, they can still be happy, and capable of working, giving them a label may have a negative effect on how others view them

- There is real life application in the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder as patients can be assessed on how abnormal they are being
- An issue is that social norms standard vary dramatically from generations and cultures, a person from another culture may label someone from another culture as being abnormal according to their standards
- Hearing voices may be socially acceptable in some cultures but in the UK it would be classified as mental abnormality
- Failure to Function Adequately
- When deciding if someone is failing to function adequately, someone has to judge whether a patient is distressed, some patients may say they are distressed but judged as not suffering
- A strength of failure to function adequately is that it does not attempt to include subjective experience of the individual, so the approach acknowledge that the experience of the patient is important
- Deviation from Ideal Mental Health
- A strength of ideal mental health is that it covers a broad range of criteria, so helps psychologists known when someone is suffering and needs help
- Very few of us reach all of Jahodas criteria for mental health, and none would achieve at the same time, therefore deviation from ideal mental health determines us all abnormal
