  • Data collection
    • Primary data is data collected by the individual in the research process.
      • Sources of primary data include; questionnaires; interviews (structured/unstructured); observation.
    • Secondary evidence is data that already exists and was collected by other people.
      • Sources of secondary data include; official statistic; the mass media; letters; diaries; photographs; studies by other sociologists.
    • Quantative data is presented in numerical form. This data can be collected from, for example, questionnaires.
      • EXAMPLE: sociologists refer to official statistics when researching crimes.
    • Qualitative data is presented in visual or verbal form. This can be collected from interviews.
      • Qualitive secondary data includes letters and newpapers.
