- Primary data is data collected by the individual in the research process.
- Sources of primary data include; questionnaires; interviews (structured/unstructured); observation.
- Secondary evidence is data that already exists and was collected by other people.
- Sources of secondary data include; official statistic; the mass media; letters; diaries; photographs; studies by other sociologists.
- Quantative data is presented in numerical form. This data can be collected from, for example, questionnaires.
- EXAMPLE: sociologists refer to official statistics when researching crimes.
- Qualitative data is presented in visual or verbal form. This can be collected from interviews.
