- Attended Dennisshawn's school of dance- they influenced their students to become experimental with their movement, to break the traditional conventions of dance.
- This inspired Graham to set up her own dance company called "The Martha Graham company"
- Graham is a "expressionist", meaning she employs "raw emotion" within her movement. Rather than dance looking aesthetically pleasing, she creates movement which is meaningful.
