    • Prominent traditional form, classical ballet.
      • Martha Graham 1894-1991
        • Attended Dennisshawn's school of dance- they influenced their students to become experimental with their movement, to break the traditional conventions of dance.
          • This inspired Graham to set up her own dance company called "The Martha Graham company"
            • Graham is a "expressionist", meaning she employs "raw emotion" within her movement. Rather than dance looking aesthetically pleasing, she creates movement which is meaningful.
              • "Everything comes from the pelvis".
              • Techniques-
                • Breath control, angular arms, release and contract, cupped hands and spirals of the spine.
              • Work created.

                  • Inspired by the story of Oedipus- Greek mythology

        • Graham is a "pioneer" of modern dance.
    • Merce Cunningham- 1919-2009
      • Ballet- Graham- Cunningham
        • Cunningham adapted both classical Ballet and Graham's techniques to create his own contemporary style.
          • Techniques
            • Long line libs (Ballet)
              • 3 curves of the spine- Lumbar, cervical spine and the Thoracic
                • "I used the spine as if it was a fifth limb"
            • Torso lifted
            • Rhythmic complexitites
            • Formalist- dance to be aesthetic
              • Art for art sake
                • Motifs, costume, sound- determined by a roll of a die.
                  • "Second hand"- 1970
                    • "Beach birds for camera" 1993
                      • Dancers wear all in one unitards to become "bodies on a stage"- gender, race etc is completely irrelevant.
      • Cunningham is a practitioner of "High modernism"
  • UK
    • Prominent traditional form, classical ballet
    • Martha Graham company came to the Uk- not well received.
      • Came again in 1933- to perform at the Edinburgh "Fringe festival"- well received.
      • Audience were used to classical Ballet from practitioners such as George Balanchine- famous practitioner "Nutcracker"
        • Used to the Mime and storytelling, dancing "En pointe" and the musicality of the performance to aid the audience's understanding of the narrative.
        • When they saw Graham's work they considered it ugly as they weren't used to the experimentation.
    • Robin Howard and Robert Cohan set up London school of contemporary dance in 1966- first place where you could train in a style other than Ballet.
      • One of the first students was Richard Alston
        • In 1975 Alston trained with Cunningham in New york
