- What is CF?
- Cystic fibrosis is an inherited condition in which the lungs and digestive system can become clogged with thick, sticky mucus.
- Signs+ symptoms
- Huge appetite
- Persistent coughing
- Excessive sweating leading to salty skin
- Pale,oily,very smelly faeces
- Impacts
- Physical
- Due to often being ill or having a lack of energy people suffering with CF may not be able to do things of a more physical nature.
- Intellectual
- may miss a lot of time off from school due to recurrent infections and so therefore low attendance
- Become behind on education
- may miss a lot of time off from school due to recurrent infections and so therefore low attendance
- Emotional & Social
- Daily treatment/ physiotherapy can be distressing and takes a lot of time, preventing taking part in some activities.
- Loneliness can occur due to not being able to do certain things and missing time with friends and peers due to hospital visits.
- may be teased and picked on due to persistent cough and the fact that they may be underweight and small for their age.
- Financial
- As people with CF are living longer , healthier and more independent lives may more are getting to work part-time or full time.
- Benefits available to support people in work and employers should arrange suitable adjustments in the work place to meet needs.
- Impact on family and carers
- Emotional strain due to worrying about the individual and whether they are at risk of an infection and trying to keep them safe.
- Parents may have to give up work to be a full time carer for their child.
