  • Treatment of CVD
    • All of these drugs reduce blood pressure, less chance of damage to artery walls.
      • Antihypertensives
        • Reduce high blood pressure
          • Beta-blockers (reduce strength of heartbeat)
          • Vasodilators (widen blood vessels)
          • Includes diuretics (reduces amount of sodium reabsorbed by the blood in kidneys)
            • Results in less water being reabsorbed (due to osmosis), reduces blood volume
        • Benefits
          • Different types of drug, can be given in combination
          • Blood pressure can be monitored at home
        • Risks
          • Side effects
            • Palpitations
            • Abnormal heart rythems
            • Fainting
            • Headaches
            • Drowsiness
            • Allergic reactions
            • Depression
      • Statins
        • Reduce cholesterol in blood
          • Reduces the amount of LDL (bad cholesterol) produced in liver
          • A lower blood cholesterol reduces atheroma formation
        • Benefits
          • Reduce risk of cvd development
        • Risks
          • Side ffects
            • Muscle/joint pain
            • Digestive system problems
            • Increases risk of diabetes
            • Nosebleeds, headaches and nausea
      • Anticoagulants
        • Reduces blood clot formations
          • Blood clots are less likely form at damaged sites
          • Less chance of blood vessels becoming blocked
          • Benefits
            • Can be used to treat patients who have blood clots already and also to prevent them from forming
          • Risk
            • Cannot get rid of existing blood clots
            • If the person is injured, it can affect the blood clotting machanism
      • Platelet Inhibitory
        • Reduce formation of blood clots
          • Type of an anticoagulant that prevents clumping platelets that form blood clots
        • Benefits
          • Can be used to treat people who have blood clots already/ CVD
        • Risks
          • Side effects:
            • Diarrhoea
            • Nausea
            • Liver function problems
            • excessive bleeding
