    • Mandatory life
      • only sentence that can be imposes when over 18 and committed murder

    • discretionary life
      • serious crimes where judge can apply life or lesser sentence e.g. man-slaughter
    • Fixed term
      • Imprisonment for set number of months or years for offenders over 21.

      • available for those serving between 3 months and 4 years.

      • dangerous offenders can be required to serve max sentence for crime and 10 years on licence

      • community penalties can be added.
