  • Crude oil
    • Fractional Distillation
      • Fractional Distillation is separating fractions with different boiling points,
        • How?
          • Crude oil gets vaporized (heated), and it goes into a column. The column gets hotter at the bottom. As crude oil has different fractions they have different boiling points so they separate.
            • The gases then cool down - as each one cools down they condense to a liquid and are collected in a tray
              • Large chain hydrocarbons are collected at the bottom as thick black liquids such as bitumen.
              • Short chain hydrocarbons have low boiling points and are collected towards the top of the column.
    • Extracting Crude oil from oil sands
      • Advantages
        • Big supply - second largest oil field in the world
        • Keeps oil prices low
      • Disadvantage
        • Water Pollution
        • GHG Emission
