    • Types of Conformity
      • Kelman suggested there are 3 ways people conform
      • Internalisation
        • We genuinely accept the group norms
        • Results in a permanent private/public change of opinion/ behaviour
      • Identification
        • We identify with the group and publicly change opinions/ behaviour to be part of it
        • We don't privately agree with everything the group stands for
      • Compliance
        • A superficial change in public
        • Personal opinions don't change, behaviour doesn't change in private
    • Explanations for Conformity
      • Deutsch/ Gerard developed a 2-process theory saying there are 2 main reasons people conform
      • Informational Social Influence (ISI)
        • The need to be right and following the people most likely to be so
        • Cognitive process - what you think
        • Mostly happens in new situations/ where there is ambiguity/ when 1 person is deemed an expert
      • Normative Social Influence (NSI)
        • Mostly happens in situations with strangers where we fear rejection/ stressful situations
        • The need to be liked and following the behaviour of others
        • Emotional process - what you feel
