  • Conformity: Ash's Research.
    • Procedure
      • Solomon Ash (1951, 1955)
      • He tested conformity by showing participants two large white cards at the same time.
      • One card have 3 lines on it and the other had one that was the same length with one of the others on the other card
        • The participants had to say which one was the same.
        • They were tested individually between six and eight confederates, the participants didn't know that the others knew the test.
      • 123 American male undergraduates.
    • Findings
      • The naïve participants gave a wrong answer 36.8% of the time/
      • Overall 25% of the participants did not conform to any trials.
      • 75% conformed at least once.
      • When the participants were interviewed after they said they conformed to avoid rejection (NSI)
    • Asch's variations.
      • Group size
        • three confederates = 31.8%
        • It made little change once it came over three confederates.
      • Unanimity
        • Wanted to know if the presence of another, non-conforming, person would affect the naïve participant's.
        • To test this, he introduced a confederate who disagree with the other, sometimes the new confederate gave the correct answers and sometimes he gave the wrong one.
      • Task Difficulty
        • Informational social influence
          • As more people conformed as they were seeking information form the others as they think they are correct and always want to be correct.
        • It suggests that we are more likely to look to others for guidance when we are not sure what is correct.
    • Evaluation
      • A child of it's time
      • Artificial situation and task
      • Limited application of findings.
    • Extra Evaluation
      • Findings only apply to certain situation.
      • Ethical Issues
