  • Conformity
    • 3 Types
      • Internalisation- going along with the majority and believing in their views
      • Compliance- going along with the majority even if you don't agree with their views
      • Identification- conforming to what is expected of you to fill a social role
    • Situational factors
      • Group size- Very small majorities are easier to resist than larger ones. But influence doesn't keep increasing with the size of the majority
      • Social support- having a fellow dissenter broke the unanimity of the group which made it easier for the participant to resist conforming
      • Task difficulty- People are more likely to conform if they're less confident they're correct
    • Confidence
      • If someone felt confident in their beliefs they are less likely to conform. E.g. Wiesenthal et al
    • Gender
      • Until the mid-1970's the dominant view was that women conform more than men. Eagly and Carli changed this view with their experiments, Differences were inconsistent
    • Case studies
      • Asch (1951)
      • Zimbardo (1973)
      • Orlando (1973)
      • Reicher and Haslam (2006)
    • Social roles
      • Sets of behaviours and expectations that come with position in life
