- Conformity
- 3 Types
- Internalisation- going along with the majority and believing in their views
- Compliance- going along with the majority even if you don't agree with their views
- Identification- conforming to what is expected of you to fill a social role
- Situational factors
- Group size- Very small majorities are easier to resist than larger ones. But influence doesn't keep increasing with the size of the majority
- Social support- having a fellow dissenter broke the unanimity of the group which made it easier for the participant to resist conforming
- Task difficulty- People are more likely to conform if they're less confident they're correct
- Confidence
- If someone felt confident in their beliefs they are less likely to conform. E.g. Wiesenthal et al
- Gender
- Until the mid-1970's the dominant view was that women conform more than men. Eagly and Carli changed this view with their experiments, Differences were inconsistent
